Thank you Mr Frank E Peretti

A lot of people ask me what my book The Eden Conflict is about and my first answer is usually, “Have you read This Present Darkness by Frank E Peretti?”

I was in my teens when I read it and it changed the way I look at the world around me. Over the last 20+ years I have re-read it several times and it continues to inspire me. Why? I think it’s the unseen interactions of the Angels and Demons around the people and how they helped with even normal type situations. It has often made me wonder what is happening around me that I don’t see, especially during times when I am tempted to sin. Is there some sort of battle being fought between the Angels and Demons and if I overcome my temptation did the Angels win which helped me or did my triumph help them… But not only that, other ways too. Like getting stuck at a red light when there is no one else around. Frustrating to me… but if it wasn’t red would I have been in an accident further up the road if I wasn’t held up? We just don’t know as we can’t see into the spiritual realms.

That’s not the only area in which Mr Peretti inspired me. I also find myself wondering about the way the demons were named. As if to highlight their ‘talent’, their particular skill to trap us humans. Using negative emotions and sinful actions like Anger and Hate, Persecution and Murder etc for their names, to me, is brilliant. It gives insight into their nature without them having to say or do anything. But it also gave me ideas on how to overcome parts of my sinful nature. If I felt myself being tempted, I have used those names as a way to overcome the temptation eg I love chocolate and I am sure that there is a demon associated with the desire to eat chocolate. So when I have been tempted in the shops to purchase a chocolate bar or three I might say to myself, get behind me chocolate or I cast chocolate out. Sounds funny (and in some ways it is) but you get the idea.

But getting back to the book. I was overjoyed when I heard of Piercing the Darkness and I read it as soon as I could. Now, I’ll admit I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first one but it still had the elements there that keeps me going back to it over and over. Then I heard of his third book and after reading it I was a little disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it but I missed the spiritual interactions of the first two. That was something that I had never read before and now it was something that I wanted to read more of.

I have only ever found two other books similar but not 100% the same. They had spiritual elements but the bulk of the stories were human related. I have found some that are solely spiritual world too. But none of them have grabbed me the way that This Present Darkness did and this got me thinking… if I enjoyed them so much there would be others who did too.

It was around 2001, when I thought that and I discussed it with a friend. On TV, there were Vampires and Witches and other supernatural shows that were popular and any Angelic characters were either not Biblical or not action related. But Angels are warriors too, aren’t they? Why aren’t they shown that way? I remembered This Present Darkness and wondered why someone didn’t turn that into a tv show. Then I thought, there is an error here, a whole type of genre not being attended too… what if I tried to fill that hole? What if I wrote a book like This Present Darkness?

And the rest, as they say, is history.

I wrote The Eden Conflict with the idea of imitating Mr Peretti’s book but not copying it. It had to have it’s own individual touch too, something to set it apart. As I thought about that and what I had felt after reading This Present Darkness I got an idea… and the character of Jack was born (I don’t want to give away what the idea was or it might ruin the surprise if you haven’t read it yet – as they say on Dr Who, “spoilers”). Then I also thought about what other stories I enjoyed reading, something with a bit of the past thrown in, which influences the future. Only this time it would be Biblical stories as the past and what better story to use for a first book than the first story in the Bible… Creation. It took ten years to complete writing it part time and get it edited. But now it is done… it is published and it is all because of you, Mr Frank E Peretti. Thank you for This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness, it inspired this humble man to try to write something similar… The Eden Conflict – Part one of the God’s Warriors series.
